Across Peterborough and the Kawarthas, community individuals, groups and agencies have been working together in a multi-year (2009-present) initiative to create and implement a Natural Heritage System made up of connected areas that maintain our ecological, social, and economic values.
Natural Heritage Systems are made up of natural heritage features and areas and linkages which are intended to provide connectivity and to maintain biological and geological diversity (Provincial Policy Statement, 2014). The KNC project is focused on the Kawartha region as featured in yellow on the map below. The buffer area is comprised of adjacent lands sharing ecological features or areas.
